Definitions in BDSM

In order for the reader to understand the meaning of this sentence there are agreed upon definitions/meanings for each of the words I’m using. Without that, all language would be gibberish. Verbal and written communication would be impossible.

Within the BDSM community there are standard meanings for words. In fact, there is a dictionary online and probably in print, though I’ve never sought one out. In order to have clear and safe communication regarding activities which can be extremely dangerous, there are set meanings so everyone knows what is being discussed.

A lawyer learns a new language, so to speak, in order to do their job adequately. The words aren’t interchangeable or loosely interpreted. Even those of us who knit and crochet must learn a new language to be successful. A pattern will not work out correctly if you don’t know how to speak the language. BDSM is the same!!!

One’s opinion, experience or understanding of a term does not change the actual meaning!! Just like in school…. learn the definition and move on. You don’t have to like it or agree. It is what it is!!

Using words incorrectly makes you look ignorant, for starters, followed by being misunderstood by your readers and lastly putting yourself in a position of stepping on toes talking about things outside of their correct meaning and potentially kink shaming. Let’s recap the first two…. you seem ignorant and are likely to be misunderstood.
